Ingredients

For the Sponge

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 1¾ cups hot water

  • 2 tablespoons butter


Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dish

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.

Step 2: Make the Sponge

  1. In a bowl, mix flour and baking powder.

  2. Stir in brown sugar and granulated sugar.

  3. Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla.

  4. Mix until smooth.

  5. Spread batter evenly into prepared dish.

Step 3: Add the Sauce Layer

  1. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cornstarch.

  2. Sprinkle mixture evenly over batter (do not stir).

  3. Carefully pour hot water over the top.

  4. Dot with butter pieces.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Bake for 35–40 minutes until the top is set and golden.

  2. Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving.
