The Best French Butter Cake is a soft, rich, and golden dessert that melts in your mouth with every bite. This classic French treat is perfect for breakfast, afternoon tea, or dessert. Ingredients

  • 1 cup (230g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar

  • 4 large eggs, room temperature

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk

  • 1 egg yolk (for glaze)

  • 1 tablespoon milk (for glaze)


Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a round 9-inch cake pan.

  2. Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.

  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

  5. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

  7. Make the glaze by whisking the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon milk together. Brush lightly over the cake batter.

  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  9. Cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

  10. Serve plain or dusted with powdered sugar, or pair with fresh fruit for an extra treat.
