Crochet Pattern — Watermelon Baby Mary Jane Shoes

Materials
- Coral-pink worsted cotton yarn
- White cotton yarn
- Green cotton yarn
- Black yarn or embroidery thread
- 3–3.5 mm crochet hook
- 2 small wooden buttons

1. Sole
Using green yarn:
Rnd 1: Ch 10. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across to last chain, 3 sc in last chain. Continue along the opposite side of the chain, sc across, 2 sc in the final stitch. (22)
Rnd 2: Inc, sc 7, 3 inc, sc 7, 2 inc. (28)
Rnd 3: Sc around, increasing at both rounded ends as needed to keep the sole flat. (Approx. 34)

Switch to white yarn for the next round and work 1 round of sc around the entire sole.
2. Pink Upper
Join coral-pink yarn around the sole.
Rnd 1: Sc around the entire sole, working into the back loops where possible to create a slight raised edge.
Rnd 2–6: Sc around. (Approx. 34–36)
Shape the toe by keeping the front rounded and gradually narrowing the sides.
Rnd 7: Sc around, making 2–3 decreases evenly across the front section.
Rnd 8–10: Sc around, continuing to decrease slightly toward the ankle opening.
FO and weave in the ends.
3. Mary Jane Strap
Using coral-pink yarn:
Row 1: Ch 18–22, depending on the desired size.
Row 2: Sc across.
Row 3: Sc across.
FO.
Sew one end of the strap to one side of the shoe and attach a small wooden button to the opposite side.
Make the second shoe the same way, reversing the strap placement.
4. Watermelon Rind Detail
Using green yarn, crochet one decorative round around the lower edge of the pink shoe.
Work sc evenly around the edge.
Add one round of white yarn directly above the green section to create the white watermelon-rind stripe.

5. Watermelon Seeds
Using black yarn or embroidery thread, add several small elongated seed shapes across the coral-pink toe.
Space the seeds naturally rather than making them perfectly symmetrical.
Secure each seed firmly on the inside of the shoe.
6. Assembly
- Make two matching green soles.
- Add the white rind stripe around each sole.
- Crochet the coral-pink upper directly onto the sole.
- Shape the rounded toe and ankle opening.
- Crochet two Mary Jane straps.
- Sew the straps securely to the shoes.
- Attach the small wooden buttons.
- Embroider the black watermelon seeds onto the toes.
- Weave in all loose ends.
- Gently shape the shoes so they keep their rounded baby-shoe form.
Finishing
Lightly block the finished shoes and allow them to dry completely before shaping them for display. Because baby sizes vary, measure the baby’s foot and adjust the sole length and stitch count rather than relying only on the stitch counts above. Never leave buttons or other small decorations unsecured on an item intended for a baby.
